How Is My Country Tonight?
Where
have all the intellectuals gone?
Tonight, I wonder, are the professors
all in bed?
Where are the young thinkers
at Vandy thinking tonight
or is that noise down the street their party instead?
The right music plays softly
the atmosphere seems exactly right
But if not here at the thinkers' coffee house
where thinks America's future tonight?
Have the older ones folded and retired their minds
and tucked their flower children away?
Have the idealists of the sixties given up
and the young ones, have they nothing to say?
I sit here in the soft light, alone, late at night
A Boomer, thinking, asking,
" How is my country tonight?"
